Helping Hands provides services to those experiencing homelessness who are ready to make sustainable changes to achieve self-sufficiency. Referrals to the Hope Center are accepted from registered community partners, listed below. Referrals are welcome 7 days a week between 8am to 8pm, for same-day placement to the shelter.
The Hope Center serves homeless men, women, and families with children. Participants must be ready to be clean and sober (even if today is day one!), and must not be registered sex offenders of any class since we serve children.

We provide shelter, classes, mentoring, and community life to single parent families who are houseless.
Homelessness
Community of Hope exists to empower homeless single-parent families to cultivate hope, healing, and stability while living in a safe, supportive environment.
Community of Hope began as a collaborative effort by the Church in North Portland in the spring of 2012 and has since grown to have the capacity to serve up to eight families at a time. Our program is 100% referral based. No wait list is maintained, but because place and stability matter, preference is given to North Portland families when spots do become available.

We facilitate... garden-based learning opportunities that encourage curiosity, honor lived experience, incorporate sustainable practices, and deepen understanding of our local environment.
We foster... connections between people and the land, food and health, education and job opportunities that improve quality of life.
We practice... critical self-reflection and constant un-learning of racism and internalized oppression, making the unconscious conscious, and shifting power towards groups that have been historically marginalized.
We build... long-lasting relationships, bringing people together over shared food and culture, meaningful dialogue, and collaborative action.
Growing Gardens’ Home Gardens Program is a three-year program that is free to Portland residents with limited resources. We provide a garden installation, plant seeds and starts, compost, tools and educational workshops.
Youth Grow provides hands-on education in school gardens to help all children feel accepted and empowered to make conscious choices, become stewards of the environment, share their culture and increase community resiliency.
In 2010 Lettuce Grow began its work in one prison garden. We are now working in 16 adult and juvenile facilities. Into these these facilitates we bring volunteers who garden with and provide horticultural education to inmates. In 2015 Lettuce Grow merged with Growing Gardens, extending our garden education services and offering to more incarcerated adults and children throughout Oregon.

Our service: a twice weekly trash collection service for North Portland folks living outside. We are an all-volunteer organization dedicated to meeting a basic need of our local houseless community. Our service also enhances neighborhood livability, protects our watersheds and serves as a bridge between our housed and houseless neighbors. In 2016, we saw a need to reduce friction between neighbors who are housed and neighbors who live unsheltered in small local camps in tents, cars and RVs. A primary source of irritation was the presence of unsightly trash around the encampments.

St Johns Farmers Market
Open Saturdays - May - October
9:00am - 2:00pm
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) provides low-income households with benefits that they can use on eligible food items, and in some cases, like cash at grocery stores and participating farmers markets, including the St. Johns Farmers Market.
The Farmers Market Fund’s Double Up Food Bucks (DUFB) program matches SNAP dollars spent at 60+ farmers markets across Oregon. Through the program, the St. Johns Farmers Market provides SNAP shoppers with a dollar-for-dollar match of up to $20 per market to buy additional fresh produce at the market.
How it works:
No sign-up process is required. SNAP participants simply swipe their Oregon Trail card at the market information booth in exchange for tokens to be used at the market. For every $1 of SNAP, up to $20 is matched in DUFB to purchase additional fresh produce from local farmers and producers. In 2023, the St. Johns Farmers Market will match both food and cash benefits.
The St. Johns Farmers Market requires farmer vendors who sell produce to participate in the Oregon Farm Direct Nutrition Program (FDNP). Oregon FDNP is a state-administered, federal nutrition program serving income-eligible seniors as well as families enrolled in the WIC (Women, Infants and Children) program. Eligibility and enrollment is determined by contacting your local WIC office (for WIC participants) or calling 1-866-299-3562 (for seniors).
How it works:
Participants receive green $4.00 checks to spend on fresh produce directly with authorized farmers. Unlike our other food access programs, the St. Johns Farmers Market is not involved in the transaction, which is conducted between the FDMP and the farmer vendor.

WeShine Initiative is a nonprofit corporation formed by a grass roots group of neighbors from several northeast and southeast neighborhoods working together to help find better solutions for people experiencing houselessness in Portland. Our goal is to site transitional micro-villages in participating neighborhoods, with start-up and operational funding from the Joint Office of Homeless Services and the City of Portland, as well as other grants and donations.
WeShine stands for Welcoming, Empowering, Safe Habitation Initiative with Neighborhood Engagement.
We were mobilized by the need for neighborhoods to engage in positive productive action to be part of the solution to houselessness—to offer hospitality rather than hostility– as well as a supportive pathway to affordable permanent housing.
WeShine is addressing the homelessness crisis by building a new model of supported micro-village on leased private property, in residential neighborhoods, with wraparound services and robust volunteer engagement. Our dream is that other neighborhoods will join us in this work and establish WeShine micro-villages throughout many Portland neighborhoods.
